Two Projects by Computer Art Faculty Members and Alumni at Nathan Love featured on Motionographer

Developed and directed by Computer Art faculty members and alumni Joe Burrascano (2002) and Anca Risca (2008), the projects McGraw Hill Reading Wonders and Ring Force were featured recently on the website Motionographer.

In Wonders, Nathan Love joins forces with McGraw Hill Education to brand their all-encompassing reading program for kids. They have created an animated trailer for the program as well as a vast range of digital media, web products and marketing material. Other alumni involved in this project are Ryan Moran (faculty and '07 alumnus), Luis E. Perez ('08 alumnus), Ylli Orana ('05 alumnus), Eric Xu ('10 alumnus), David Han ('08 alumnus), David Avetisov ('06 alumnus) and David Lee ('11 alumnus), as well as current students from the class of 2013.

Ring Force is a children's book created by Nathan Love in the spirit of the 2012 Olympics. The books follows the adventures of five different kids, each with their own Olympic dreams. Another of our current students, Ellen Su (class of 2013), also worked on this project.

2007 & 2010 Alumni screen at Iron Mule Festival

Iron Mule Short Comedy Film Festival features the best in short comedy films on the first Saturday of every month, and this month on November 6th, 2010 alumnus Dillon McCarthy's film Tombstoned and 2007 alumna Sylvia Apostol's A Faery's Tale will be screening at 92YTribeca. The short film, Little Spirit: Christmas in New York, produced and directed by Curious Pictures, premiered Wednesday December 10th at 8:00 pm on NBC. The film involved several people from our department, including:

Below is a brief description:

When a friendly cabbie (Danny DeVito) tells two young sisters the story of a boy named Leo (Michael Hall D'Addario)who moved to Manhattan with his family, a magical adventure begins. While adjusting to the big city and enjoying the days leading up to Christmas, Leo accidentally loses his dog Ramona in Central Park. Leo is devastated by his loss until a magical creature named Little Spirit appears and takes him on a quest to find Ramona. Leo and Little Spirit venture out on the journey of a lifetime, taking in the festive surroundings of the city and meeting people from all walks of life. By the time Leo is reunited with Ramona, he has an eclectic group of friends that make the strange city seem like home.

2007 Alumnus wins Grand Jury Award at this year's NICKTOONS Network Animation Festival

During the month of October, Min Chung Cho's film El Mono was broadcasted live on the Nicktoons Network with four other 2008 and 2007 alumni. After much deliberation and outstanding viewer feedback, the Grand Jury of the Nicktoons Network Animation Festival awarded Min the Grand Jury Award of $10,000 for her film.

Live Broadcast of 2007 & 2008 Alumni Films via NICKTOONS Network

Five films from 2007 and 2008 alumni have been selected to participate in this year's Nicktoons Network Animation Festival. Their selection has won them a live television broadcast on the Nicktoons Network (check your local cable or satellite television provider for channel info). These films have been selected and will air at the following times:

The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival, back for its 5th year, is the first ever multi-platform festival featuring the best animated shorts (10 minutes and under) from around the globe. Prize winners will be announced during the exclusive live event for creators in Los Angeles on October 3rd. These films, along with the other selected films, will also be featured online where viewers can vote (GO VOTE) on their favorite shorts. A new short will air each night in October at 11pm, at which time that short will also be available for online viewing and voting.

2007 Alumni to screen at 1 Reel Film Festival 2008

The film Office Mobius by Seung Il Hwang & Seung Hyung Lee will screen at the 1 Reel Film Festival, part of the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle. The 1 Reel Festival, organized by the Seattle International Film Festival, will present 27 special programs of short films over Labor Day weekend at Seattle Center.

2007 Alumni participate at Hiroshima Animation Festival 2008

At this year's 12th International Hiroshima Animation Festival in Japan, A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol and The Kabob by Han Hu will screen as part of the festival's Stars of Students program. The following is a statement from the Festival Director, Sayoko Kinoshita: "Our festival has been held under the spirit of love and peace, long since its establishment in 1985. It is our pleasure to serve as a place of true international cultural exchange through the development of animation art…"

2007 Alumni sweep Young Cuts Festival 2008

At this year's Young Cuts Film Festival, six different films by 2007 alumni screened during the seven days of the festival in Montreal, Canada:

The sixth film, Office Mobius by Seung Il Hwang and Seung Hyung Lee, won the Avid Award for Best Editing! The Young Cuts Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing, promoting, assisting and mentoring talented emerging filmmakers. 2007 Alumni participate at Anima Mundi

Three 2007 films will screen at the 16th International Animation Festival of Brazil, ANIMA MUNDI 2008, in Rio de Janiero July 11th-20th and Sao Paulo July 23rd-27th. A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol, Fish by Hyun Jeen Lee & Jun Sik Na, and The Big Upgrade by James Dick and Ryan Moran were selected from over 1200 submissions. This festival brings the best animation from around the world to Brazil. It will present competition screenings, special programs, retrospectives, international guests and professional workshops.

2007 Alumni films to screen at Woods Hole Film Festival

Three films by 2007 alumni have been accepted at this year's Woods Hole Film Festival in the town of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Office Mobius by Seung Il Hwang & Seung Hyung Lee, The Big Upgrade by James Dick and Ryan Moran, and A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol will be screening during the week of July 26th through August 2nd. The 17th Woods Hole Film Festival is an eight day showcase of independent film featuring daily screenings, workshops, panel discussions, staged readings, special events, parties, awards ceremony and more. It's held annually for a week beginning on the last weekend of July and is the oldest independent film festival on Cape Cod and the Islands.

2007 Alumni participate at Tricky Women Animation Film Festival 2008

The film A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol, one of our 2007 alumni, has been selected for the international competition section of the 2008 Tricky Women Animation Film Festival. Awards will be announced during the festival which will run March 27th - 30th, 2008. Organized by Culture2Culture, Tricky Women is the first and only animation festival dedicated exclusively to female animation filmmakers. The international competition is the heart of Tricky Women 2008, which runs over five days packed with a full program of films.

2007 Alumni participate at Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Films (Trickfilm Festival)

The 15th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film will be screening Fish by Hyun Jeen Lee and Jun Sik Na, two of our 2007 alumni. The festival will be running May 1st through the 6th in Stuttgart, Germany. With over 50,000 visitors to cinemas in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg and to the open-air even on Stuttgart's main square 'Schlossplatz' as well as 1,000 professionals, the festival is one of the largest events for animated film worldwide.

2007 Alumnus wins Best Student Work at 2007 International "Gold Panda" Awards for Animation Festival

The film A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol has won Best Student Work in the 2007 SCTV International "Gold Panda" Awards for Animation Festival. Organized by Sichuan TV in the city Chengdu of the Sichuan province of China. The International 'Gold Panda' Awards for Animation is designed to help promote international dialogue within the animation industry and encourage local excellent works to enter into the global marketplace as well as building cooperative relationships amongst animation companies around the world.

2007 Alumni participate at Victoria Film Festival

The Victoria Film Festival has accepted three films by our 2007 alumni. Remembrance by Alejandro Monzón, El Mono by Minchung Cho, and A Faery's Tale by Sylvia Apostol will be screened during their ten-day program, February 1st through the 10th, 2008. This is the 14th year of the Victoria Film Festival, whose mission is to expose the youth and adults to a broad range of cultural, artistic and philosophical ideas and lifestyles through the presentation of film, video, new media and interactivities in order to stimulate critical analysis and inspire an interest in using the medium as a creative tool.

2007 Alumni win 1st Place Animation at 2007 FLIFF Collegiate Competiton

The 2007 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival Collegiate Competition awarded Fish the 1st Place prize in Animation, a film by 2007 alumni Hyun Jeen Lee & Jun Sik Na. All the first place winning films will be screened on November 5th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Begun as a collegiate competition in 1989, the festival had immediate success and soon became an international competition to include films by high school filmmakers as well.

2007 Alumni given exclusive screening at Big Apple Film Festival - November 17th

The Best of 2007 BFA Computer Art student films have been accepted by the Big Apple Film Festival, which will be running November 14th - 17th at the Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. On Saturday 17th there will be a special program, designed to include all eighteen Best of 2007 films, which will then be followed by a panel discussion as described below:

This year the Big Apple Film Festival will offer a panel discussion entitled, “Film Distribution in the New Age”. The panel will focus on new outlets available to filmmakers in the 21st century to distribute and market independent films. The discussion will include information on the current trends available in the area of digital distribution, the future of independent film distribution through online, on demand and digital cable outlets and how to utilize online resources most effectively to market content, through websites such as YouTube and MySpace.

Panelists include: Clémence Taillandier (Head of Theatrical Sales, Zeitgeist Films), Brian Chirls (Four Eyed Monsters), Erik Davis(Managing Editor, Cinematical.com), Peter Goldwyn (Vice President Acquisitions, Samuel Goldwyn Films). The panel will be moderated by Aaron Levine of the Gen Art Film Division.

2007 Alumni films selected for CortoonsTV

Beginning in November, films by eleven 2007 BFA Computer Art alumni will be broadcast regularly by CortoonsTV, an animated film channel produced by Cortitalia, a cultural association for the promotion of professional cinema, photography, and communications from around the world. Based in Rome, Italy, Cortitalia also organizes the International Animation Film Festival of Potenza (PIAFF) where these films have already been accepted (see below). 2007 Alumni dominate at MetroCAF 2007

On Thursday, September 27th, MetroCAF 2007 screened seven films by 2007 BFA Computer Art alumni. The films featured were:

Minchung Cho, Hyunjeen Lee and Sun Sik Na were awarded Jury Recognitions. MetroCAF screenings were held in the Fashion Institute of Technology's Haft Auditorium on W. 27th street between 7th and 8th Avenues in New York City. This is an exciting opportunity for students in the NYC metropolitan area to gain international exposure for their computer-generated imagery and make contacts in the computer graphics community.

2007 Alumni awarded at World Student Film Festival (WSFF)

The film Fish by Hyunjeen Lee and Jun Sik Na, two 2007 BFA Computer Art alumni, were awarded Second Place for Animation Short at the World Student Film Festival in Bangkok, Thailand. WSFF is in search of the best undiscovered talent in the film industry. The festival is a world wide showcase of student film directors, actors, writers, and animators.

The Flip Animation Film Festival will be screening films from two of our 2007 alumni. The Big Upgrade by James Dick and Ryan Moran and El Mono by Minchung Cho will be screened in November of this year in the United Kingdom. The Flip Animation Film Festival is an eclectic mix of all things animation.
